Rekey or Replace Your Locks? The Honest Guide for Williamstown Homes

Rekeying vs replacing locks explained: when each makes sense, what it involves, and how to decide after moving house, losing keys or a break-in in Williamstown VIC.

"Do I need new locks, or can you just change the key?" It's the question we hear most. Here is the honest answer — including when the cheaper option is the right one.

What rekeying actually means

Inside a pin-tumbler cylinder are small spring-loaded pins of different lengths. Your key lifts them to exactly the right height. Rekeying swaps those pins for a new set, so:

  • ✅ Your existing lock and hardware stay.
  • ✅ A new key works.
  • ❌ Every old key stops working.

What replacing means

Replacing removes the lock body or cylinder and installs new hardware. You get a new key and a new mechanism — useful when the old one is worn, damaged or simply not secure enough.

Quick decision table

Signs a lock needs replacing, not rekeying

  • Key turns but the bolt doesn't fully throw.
  • Visible damage, rust or a loose cylinder.
  • Door has dropped and the bolt fights the strike plate (sometimes a simple adjustment fixes this!).
  • The lock is a cheap knob set on an external door with no deadlock.

The "one key for everything" bonus

If your front, back and garage locks share a compatible keyway, they can often be rekeyed to work on one key. Fewer keys, less to lose.
