Losing car keys feels worse than house keys because modern car keys are small computers. Here's how to handle it calmly.
First: retrace and check
- Last place you drove, shops, gym bag, jacket pockets.
- Call venues you visited — keys are handed in more often than you'd think.
- Find your spare — even a damaged spare can help identify the key type.
Have this information ready
- Make, model and year
- Registration / VIN (on rego papers or the windscreen)
- Key type: metal only, remote/fob, or push-start proximity key
- Proof of ownership — any legitimate locksmith will ask
Why it isn't "just cutting a key"
Most cars from the late 1990s onward have a transponder chip. The car must recognise the chip before it starts, so new keys often need cutting and programming. Capability genuinely varies by make, model and year — which is why an honest locksmith asks questions before promising anything.
Locked out instead?
Keys locked inside with the car? Don't use coat hangers or wedges on the door — you can damage seals, paint and wiring. Call for lockout assistance.
