Locked Out of Your House in Williamstown? A Calm, Step-by-Step Guide
Locked out in Williamstown VIC? What to check first, what never to do, how to spot a dodgy locksmith, and how to get back inside without damaging your door.

Being locked out is stressful — keys on the bench, door clicked shut, rain starting over Hobsons Bay. The good news: most lockouts are solved quickly and without damage if you avoid a few common mistakes. This guide is what we tell people over the phone every week.
1. Stop and check every way in (safely)
Before calling anyone, take two minutes:
- Other doors: back door, laundry door, garage internal door.
- Who else has a key? Partner, housemate, neighbour, family, property manager.
- Renting? Your agent or landlord may hold a spare key during business hours.
- Is anyone inside who needs help? A child, an elderly person or a pet in danger is an emergency — call 000 first.
Do not climb onto roofs, squeeze through windows or break glass. A broken window often costs more than a professional lockout, and injuries are common.
2. Don't force the lock
Credit cards, screwdrivers and YouTube tricks rarely work on modern deadlocks — and they frequently damage the cylinder, strike plate or door frame. A five-minute entry job can turn into a lock replacement. Leave the lock untouched.
3. Know your lock type before you call
It helps any locksmith give you an honest answer quickly:
| Lock type | What it looks like | Typical approach |
|---|---|---|
| Knob/lever set only | Key in the handle, no separate deadbolt | Often non-destructive entry |
| Deadbolt / deadlatch | Separate key cylinder above handle | Usually non-destructive, depends on model |
| Security screen door | Triple-lock mesh or bar door | Assessed case by case |
| Smart / keypad lock | Battery-powered keypad | Check batteries and backup key first |
4. How to spot a trustworthy locksmith (and avoid the scams)
Lockout scams are real across Australia: a cheap quote on the phone, then a huge bill on the doorstep. Protect yourself:
- Ask for a clear price range before anyone travels — call-out, labour and parts.
- Check there is a real local address, not just a call-centre number. Ours is 71 Kororoit Creek Rd, Williamstown VIC 3016 — you can look it up on Google Maps.
- Be wary of anyone who wants to drill immediately. Drilling is a last resort, not a first step.
- Expect to show ID or proof of residence. A good locksmith checks you live there — that protects you too.
- Get an itemised invoice.
5. After you're back inside
- If keys were lost or stolen, consider rekeying so old keys no longer work — usually cheaper than replacing locks. See our rekeying and keys service.
- Leave a spare with someone you trust (never under the doormat).
- Consider a keypad deadlock if lockouts keep happening.
